The Supreme Court of New Jersey, addressing the “traumatic event” standard under the accidental disability retirement provisions of the State Police Retirement System (SPRS) and the Police and Firemen’s Retirement System (PFRS), has held that an applicant who suffered a permanent mental disability as a result of a mental stressor without any physical impact (a so-called “mental-mental” injury) may qualify for accidental disability retirement benefits.
