In Celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month Wong Fleming Recognizes Justice Sonia Sotomayor

United States Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayer was the first Hispanic woman to serve as an Associate Justice on the U.S. Supreme Court. She was appointed to the Supreme Court in 2009 by President Barack Obama. Between the years 1979 to 1991, Justice Sotomayer worked in the Manhattan district attorney office and later became a Partner at the private practice of the New York City law firm, Pavia & Harcourt. On November 27, 1991, Justice Sotomayer was nominated to the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York by the George H. W. Bush administration.

Justice Sotomayor attended Princeton University where she was an activist for Puerto Rican rights, served as co-chairman of the Acción Puertorriqueña, and led the movement to end employment discrimination within the Princeton administration. Justice Sotomayer continued on to Yale Law School where she began her legal career.
