Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States, and originated in Galveston, Texas in 1865. Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement, and is marked by celebrations, guest speakers, picnics and family gatherings around the country. Governor Andrew Cuomo announced on June 17, 2020 that he will be seeking to declare Juneteenth an official state holiday in New York. For more information, please go to Juneteenth.com.
